NAGRC&DB Participates in the 11th Karamoja Cultural Event

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) participated in the 11th Karamoja Cultural Event, held from 6th–12th September 2026 in Karamoja. The event was officially opened on 9th September 2026, with H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, as Chief Guest.

Held under the theme, “From Heritage to Enterprise: Building Resilient Pastoral Economies through Healthy Livestock, Productive Rangelands, Peace, and Markets,” the event brought together Ateker pastoral communities from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia, alongside government institutions, development partners and other stakeholders. The annual gathering promotes cultural heritage, peace, cross-border cooperation and sustainable pastoral development.

NAGRC&DB participated as a partner under the Healthy Livestock & Productive Rangelands thematic area and as an implementer of the Goat Community-Based Breeding Programme (CBBP) under the Pastoralism and Livestock Adaptation to Climate Change in Eastern Africa (PLACE) Programme, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with funding from the European Union.

Through the engagement, NAGRC&DB showcased its contribution to animal genetic improvement and community-based breeding programmes, highlighting their role in supporting more productive and resilient livestock systems for pastoral communities. The Healthy Livestock & Productive Rangelands thematic area also focuses on livestock health, rangeland restoration, fodder production and community breeding programmes.

NAGRC&DB’s participation reinforces the Centre’s commitment to working with livestock-keeping communities and partners to sustainably improve and utilise Uganda’s animal genetic resources for enhanced livestock productivity, resilient livelihoods and national development.
