Conservation and Gene banking (National & Eastern African Regional) Unit

The Conservation and Gene Banking Unit has facilities to conserve germplasm of local livestock breeds from 13 countries of the East African region. It also serves to provide backup conservation of national animal genetic resources (AnGR).

National Animal Genetic Evaluation and Testing Centre

National Animal Genetic Evaluation and Testing Centre Unit is located in Entebbe and it consists of infrastructure that houses laboratories (testing units) for both the Regional Gene bank and the National Gene bank.

Foundation fish brood stock & fry production Unit

NAGRC introduced the Fish Program whose implementation was embarked on last year 2020 with more focus on fish breeding, production and promotion of genetically improved fry/fingerlings, conservation of fisheries resources and technology transfer.

National Small Ruminants Breeding Resources Centre unit (Goats & Sheep)

NAGRC & DB is currently promoting goat production through raising an ellite parent stock of pure South African Boer, Pure Black Mubende, Pure Mubende spotted, the Kasolwe Small East African breed and the Kigezi.

Poultry Development Unit

This unit is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of projects and programs for more efficient reproduction and breeding of poultry using appropriate and acceptable technologies.

Semen Production, Packaging, Storage and Distribution Unit

NAGRC&DB collects semen from high quality bulls, the semen is subjected to both macroscopic and microscopic examination, the concentration of sperm in the sample is the then determined using a photometer.

Liquid Nitrogen Production and Distribution Unit

NAGRC&DB has three liquid nitrogen plants, located at Njeru, Mbarara and at the Bullstud in Entebbe. The production capacity of the Liquid Nitrogen plant at the Regional bullstud is 80 litres per hour. The one in Mbarara and Njeru has a production capacity of 5 litres per hour.

National Pig Grand-parent Resources Centre Unit

The National Animal Genetic Resources Center and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has developed a National pig breeding improvement strategy where, breeding plans, goals and objectives will be well elaborated to reduce the admix of breeds which is highly likely.

Apiculture Unit for production of (food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic grade products).

The apiary enterprise at Aswa ranch is at extensive level with a good number of Kenya Top Bars (KTB) and Longstroth bee hives well colonized. The environment favours mainly Apis mellifera adansonii bee species which is the common African bee. The most common bee forage is naturally growing sheer tree together with the artificially planted Calliandra calothyrsus
