NAGRC&DB Participates in World Veterinary Week 2026 to Enhance Food Security and Livestock Productivity

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) actively participated in the World Veterinary Week 2026 celebrations. The event took place from 21st to 24th April 2026 at the Emokori Grounds in Bukedea District. Held under the global theme, “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health,” the event highlighted the critical role veterinarians play in securing safe food systems and improving rural livelihoods.

The week-long event was officially opened by the Mayor of Bukedea District, with the climax of the celebrations on 24th April 2026 officiated by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament.

Empowering Farmers Through Technical Training

In line with its core mandate to conserve, improve, and sustainably utilize animal genetic resources, NAGRC&DB deployed its field veterinarians to conduct intensive, hands-on training sessions. The agency showcased cutting-edge innovations and engaged local farmers through practical training focused on:

  • Animal breeding: Demonstrating advanced reproductive technologies to improve herd genetics.
  • Disease control: Educating farmers on proper animal health management and disease prevention.
  • Food safety: Sharing critical guidelines on maintaining food safety standards at the farm level.
  • Farm management: Introducing improved management practices to turn traditional farming into profitable businesses.

Boosting Local Livestock Service Delivery

As the World Veterinary Week 2026 celebrations successfully concluded in Bukedea District, NAGRC&DB translated its training into immediate field action. To strengthen local livestock service delivery, the agency distributed essential breeding supplies, including liquid nitrogen and semen straws, directly to the Bukedea District Local Government and local Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians.

Long-Term Impact on Farming Communities

This timely intervention directly supports the scale-up of artificial insemination services across the region. By equipping local technicians with high-quality genetic materials and the means to preserve them, NAGRC&DB ensures that smallholder farmers have reliable, last-mile access to superior livestock genetics. Ultimately, these efforts will enhance livestock productivity, boost farmers’ incomes, and contribute to national food security.
