NAGRC&DB Enhances Livestock Productivity Through Three Transformative Trainings

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) continues to lead efforts in advancing Uganda’s livestock industry by investing in capacity-building initiatives. In one impactful week, the Centre successfully conducted three major training programs, empowering professionals with essential skills in artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and veterinary paraprofessional education.

Empowering Artificial Insemination (AI) Technicians

In partnership with URUS, NAGRC&DB celebrated the certification of 34 Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians from 18 districts. After an intensive three-week program, participants gained hands-on expertise in AI techniques, genetic improvement, estrous cycle management, conception rate enhancement, pregnancy diagnosis, and ethical AI practices. These newly skilled technicians are now better equipped to improve cattle genetics, contributing to increased productivity in Uganda’s livestock sector.

Advancing Bovine Reproduction with Embryo Transfer (ET) Technology

NAGRC&DB also collaborated with URUS Uganda and Iowa State University to conduct a specialized training on Embryo Transfer (ET) Technology. Led by globally renowned bovine reproduction expert, Professor Curt R. Youngs of Iowa State University, the program provided select technicians with hands-on experience in advanced ET techniques. This initiative is set to modernize Uganda’s cattle breeding programs, enhancing genetic diversity and positioning the country as a leader in livestock improvement across the region.

Training the Trainers: Strengthening Veterinary Education & Entrepreneurship

To further support Uganda’s veterinary sector, NAGRC&DB partnered with FAO Uganda and Bukalasa Agricultural College to host a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the Empowering Veterinary Paraprofessional Entrepreneurs project. The workshop focused on equipping trainers with advanced facilitation skills, standardized training content, and business development strategies. A key outcome was the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency in training Veterinary Paraprofessionals (VPPs). By enhancing veterinary education, the initiative aims to improve animal healthcare services and foster entrepreneurship within the sector.

Commitment to a Thriving Livestock Industry

These training programs reflect NAGRC&DB’s dedication to strengthening Uganda’s livestock sector by equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable agricultural growth. By fostering innovation in animal breeding, veterinary service delivery, and agribusiness development, the Centre continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a prosperous future for Uganda’s livestock farmers.
