NAGRC&DB Showcases Innovation at the AU Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme

From January 9th-11th, 2025, Uganda played host to a pivotal moment in African agricultural development as the African Union (AU) Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) took place in Munyonyo, Kampala. This extraordinary summit brought together Heads of State, Government leaders, and AU Commission officials from across the continent to discuss and adopt the new strategic blueprint for Africa’s agricultural growth for the next decade – the #CAADPKampalaDeclaration.

The summit’s significance cannot be overstated, as the CAADP framework is central to shaping Africa’s agricultural policies under the continent’s Agenda 2063. The adoption of the #CAADPKampalaDeclaration is a validation of Uganda’s remarkable journey in agricultural development and underscores the country’s critical role in shaping the future of Africa’s agricultural landscape.

The CAADP framework, a key component of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, focuses on transforming agriculture to improve food security, livelihoods, and overall economic development. The #CAADPKampalaDeclaration represents a bold commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and collective action in Africa’s agricultural sector.

As a leading institution in Uganda’s agricultural transformation, the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) was proud to participate in this prestigious event. Alongside officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), NAGRC&DB management met with the Director of the AU-IBAR to discuss the operationalization of the African Union Animal Seed Centre of Excellence, hosted by Uganda at NAGRC&DB Headquarters in Entebbe. This collaboration is poised to drive the continent’s livestock development agenda.

At the summit, NAGRC&DB also showcased its cutting-edge agricultural solutions. The Centre highlighted its advanced Assisted Reproductive Technologies, which are instrumental in improving livestock breeding efficiency, and its Embryo Transfer Van-Mobile Laboratory, providing essential diagnostic and veterinary services to remote areas. In addition, NAGRC&DB displayed its gene banking solutions, which preserve genetic resources vital for enhancing livestock resilience and productivity.

NAGRC&DB’s exhibition reaffirmed Uganda’s leadership role in advancing livestock management and agricultural innovation on the continent. The Centre’s participation in the AU Summit further strengthens Uganda’s position as a key player in driving sustainable agricultural development across Africa.

With the adoption of the #CAADPKampalaDeclaration, Uganda’s agricultural vision aligns with Africa’s broader goals, setting the stage for the next phase of agricultural transformation under Agenda 2063.
