“NAGRC&DB and ILRI Collaborate to Enhance Livestock Genetic Conservation in Uganda”

In a significant step towards advancing livestock research and conservation in Uganda, the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) recently signed a collaborative agreement with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). This partnership aims to strengthen efforts in the establishment and conservation of livestock genetic resources, focusing on innovative research and training.

On the heels of this agreement, NAGRC&DB hosted a comprehensive training session on sampling local pig skin tissue for the establishment of fibroblast skin lines. This initiative is a pioneering effort to enhance the conservation of indigenous livestock breeds through advanced biotechnological methods. The session saw participation from esteemed institutions including the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH)/ILRI, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), and Makerere University.

Upcoming Training Phases

As part of this collaborative effort, the training will be conducted in two phases. The pilot phase, scheduled from September 2nd to 7th, will begin with a two-day theoretical and practical workshop at the NAGRC&DB Gene Bank. This workshop will focus on; an overview of pig biodiversity in Uganda, potential of stem cell technologies for conservation of genetic resources, collection of skin samples for fibroblast propagation, a critical step in preserving genetic material for future research and livestock breeding programs.

Following the workshop, participants will engage in three days of field sampling in various farmer settings across three localities in Wakiso District. It will involve collection of pig-skin tissue for local breeds conservation. This fieldwork aims to provide hands-on experience in real-world environments, ensuring the effective application of training in livestock conservation practices.

Looking Ahead

This collaboration represents a vital move towards sustainable livestock management and conservation in Uganda. By leveraging cutting-edge research and practical training, NAGRC&DB and its partners are paving the way for a more resilient and diverse livestock sector.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting initiative and follow our journey as we work towards a brighter future for livestock conservation in Uganda.
