NAGRC&DB Partners with ILRI to Enhance Livestock Programs Using Innovative Technologies

12th August 2024 – Kampala, Uganda – The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has entered into a significant collaborative agreement with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). This partnership aims to advance programs in cattle, poultry, pigs, and goats through the application of cutting-edge innovative technologies.

NAGRC&DB, with its two-fold mandate to spearhead the commercialization of animal breeding activities in Uganda and enhance animal genetic improvement and productivity, has found a strategic partner in ILRI. The latter’s mission is to improve the lives of people in low- and middle-income countries through livestock science that contributes to equitable and resilient livestock systems. This partnership is set to drive the transformation of food systems with a focus on climate and environmental benefits.

The collaboration will focus on several key areas, including:

  • Cryopreservation and Bio-banking: Ensuring the long-term preservation of valuable genetic resources.
  • Stem Cell Biology: Exploring the potential of stem cells in livestock production and improvement.
  • Climate Smart Technologies: Developing and implementing technologies that make livestock systems more resilient to climate change.
  • Collaborative Research: Joint research initiatives aimed at solving key challenges in livestock production.
  • Training: Building capacity in livestock management and genetic improvement through training programs.
  • Vaccine Development: Creating effective vaccines to enhance animal health and productivity.
  • Immuno-genomics: Studying the immune system of livestock at the genetic level to improve disease resistance.
  • Livestock Genomics: Utilizing genomic information to improve breeding and productivity.
  • Precision Breeding: Implementing precise breeding techniques to optimize livestock traits.
  • Microbiome Research: Investigating the livestock microbiome to reduce the use of antibiotics.
  • Production of Bio-based Feed Additives: Developing natural feed additives to enhance livestock nutrition.
  • Livestock Data Management and Analytics: Using data-driven approaches to optimize livestock production and management.

This collaboration is expected to significantly boost the livestock sector in Uganda, making it more productive, sustainable, and resilient to environmental challenges. The integration of these innovative technologies will not only enhance livestock productivity but also contribute to the broader goals of food security and economic development in the region.

Dr. Peter Beine, Executive Director of NAGRC&DB, expressed his optimism about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration with ILRI is a game-changer for Uganda’s livestock sector. The innovative technologies and research initiatives we are embarking on will revolutionize livestock production in the country, ensuring we meet the growing demand for high-quality animal products while also addressing the challenges posed by climate change.”

The partnership between NAGRC&DB and ILRI is expected to serve as a model for other collaborations in the region, showcasing the potential of science and technology to transform agriculture and improve livelihoods.
