Breeding & Reproduction

The breeding and reproduction department is responsible for managing the reproduction and breeding of animals using the most appropriate and acceptable breeding technologies and techniques.

 

The core Departmental functions are;

  • Offers and conducts specialized training to technicians dealing in breeding;

  • Trains staff and farmers in aspects of animal and fish breeding while, monitoring breeding activities and collaborating in research on genetic improvement and characterization of breeds and production environments
  • Encourages the formation of breeders’ associations and fosters breed societies
  • Develops guidelines and implements field-oriented breeding extension services for field workers and farmers;
  • Provides guidance on breeding and multiplication of improved breeds
  • Promotes herd recording and performance testing on farms
  • Ensures conservation of the indigenous animal genetic resources in Uganda
  • Adapts and applies breeding and production technologies e.g. Assisted Reproductive Technologies
